I ran across an old (some would even say ancient) discipleship tool called the 3-Fold Way. I will be teaching about it a bit tomorrow. It has been very helpful to me in my own spiritual journey. I hope it helpful to you.
1. Via Purgation/Katharsis
Take time to identify those things in your life that are keeping the light of God out. The main three things that the ancients identified were Pride, Lust, & Greed. Money, Sex, & Power! How much do these three things influence your decisions each day? How much do these things "own" you?
Take some time to think through this. Explore this with a couple of spiritual friends and honestly talk about the grip these things have in your life.
2. Via Illuminativa/Fotosis
In this path one purposefully exposes him or herself to the Light of God. This is done through simply spending time reading and studying the Bible as well as time with God's people in worship and prayer.
3. Via Unitiva/Theosis
Just as the iron one would use to poke the fire takes on the hot nature of the fire if left in the fire, so also we must take on the nature of God as we place ourselves in the very presence of God. What are you doing each day to place yourself in God's presence?
As you explore these more, I hope you will experience new ground in your spiritual journey.
